"Chinetoque", "ching chang chong", "canard laqué", "face de citron": French people of Asian origin are subjected to these insults as early as the school playground. Referred to by their skin color, referred to as a single group, their very different histories and family backgrounds are often ignored. Journalist Émilie Tran Nguyen was confronted with these deep-rooted racial stereotypes. Born to a French mother of Algerian origin and a Vietnamese father, Émilie grew up in Clermont-Ferrand, where her parents ran an Asian restaurant. A triple culture that wasn't always easy to grasp.
By investigating her own family, Émilie wanted to understand how it had come to this, and why the first generations had kept silent for so long. A personal and essential documentary that reveals whole swathes of an often trivialized history: the story of French people who some continue to call a "model minority", reputed to be rich and docile, to the point of making them the preferred target of sometimes violent attacks. The post-Covid era has further amplified these prejudices in the face of a supposed "yellow peril".
